What are designer babies? They are babies whose genetic makeup has been selected in order to eliminate a particular defect, or to ensure a particular gene is present. Parent's can go to a geneticist and use their chromosomes to chose the genes for their baby they find ideal. These characteristics include: eye color, hair color, intelligence level, athleticism, height, gender, etc. Also, with per-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), prevention of diseases and disorders can be achieved. Some disease that can be prevented are Huntington's Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, or a genetic condition, such as Down's Syndrome. In a more medical aspect, parents with kids who have rare medical diseases, can go see a geneticist to make a perfect match as a donor for their sick child.
